Agostinho Neto Honored By Diplomats and The Student Community At The Embassy of The Republic of Angola in the Republic of India on 19th of September 2026

The Historical Profile of Agostinho Neto and the international projection of Angola’s first President was the central theme of a political, diplomatic, and cultural meeting held on Saturday, September 19th, at the Angolan Embassy in India.

The event, which marked National Hero’s Day (September 17th), brought together diplomats, locally recruited staff, and Angolan students in India.

The Embassy’s Minister Counselor, Abel Mavungo, key speaker of the meeting, highlighted the multifaceted trajectory of the Nation’s Founder, addressing aspects including identity, the liberation struggle, diplomacy, Pan-Africanism, culture, foreign policy for regional integration, and key lessons from Agostinho Neto for Angolan youth.

During his speech, the diplomat underlined Agostinho Neto’s patriotism and his central role in the proclamation of independence in 1975.

Mr. Abel Mavungo particularly urged young students to preserve patriotism, national unity, and collective memory as a unifying element for all Angolans, regardless of their political or geographical background.

The program included the recitation of Agostinho Neto’s poetry and traditional Angolan dance performances.

The celebrations also featured a chronological photo exhibition detailing the historical journey and various dimensions of the life of Dr. António Agostinho Neto (1922–1979).
